The annual Junior Interior Design Competition, in collaboration with VCUarts Qatar, BYH's educational competition partner – has enjoyed four years of nurturing Qatar's future design talent. Three shortlisted competition winners, chosen by a jury from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) MEA and Eng. Maram Al Zghoul, will be announced at Build Your House Exhibition during day 2, 16 May, and be awarded prizes and showcase their designs at the VCUarts Qatar booth.
Each year, VCUarts Qatar's Junior Interior Design competition challenges students to work on a design brief to suit a particular home user's needs. This year's brief, created in collaboration with Msheireb Properties, asked students to create a Live/Work hybrid space that combines a home for two distinct users to live in and work from.
Liam Colquhoun, Associate Professor of Interior Design Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, said: "Residential design is a booming sector in Qatar as well as an integral element of the VCUarts Qatar Interior Design curriculum. It is an area of design that forces students to consider the importance of user customization, site analysis and precedents. This particular sophomore-level project, developed with assistance from our partners at Msheireb Properties, asked students to develop a Live-Work hybrid space that combines a home for two distinct users to live in and work from. It is also a pleasure to continue our collaboration with Nextfairs, whose support allows the work of our students to be disseminated to a wide audience of industry professionals at the Build Your House 2023 Expo. Collaborative partnerships with prominent stakeholders like Msheireb Properties and Nextfairs enrich the VCUarts Qatar interior design program and elevate the work of our student body."
Build Your House Exhibition 2023 is an educational and insightful event for visitors and a not-to-be-missed opportunity for exhibitors seeking access to a primed niche market. The event enables Qatari housebuilders to understand the processes they must undertake to complete their home build – including vital government registration and access to housing loans. While it also connects these housebuilders to the contractors and suppliers they need to build the house of their dreams – ensuring deals are made and significantly boosting the local construction industry.
Qatar's construction industry is enjoying its best returns from the current year, according to a report by Al-Asmakh Real Estate Projects. In addition, the report highlighted the country's ability to maintain its position as one of the safest and strongest sectors, thanks to the continued government spending on major development projects included in the 2023 budget and the stimulus that this represents.
The report added that one of the most critical factors leading to the growth of the real estate sector was the continuation of work on the completion of infrastructure projects, especially the development of citizens' lands. The report indicated that in addition to the high-value contracts that have been tendered, many contracts related to infrastructure, such as roads and sanitation and the development of citizens' lands were the focus of real estate construction activity in the second half of this year. In short, the project market in Qatar is receiving a solid impetus through two related goals: national development and building infrastructure.
The fourth edition of Build Your House Exhibition is set to connect Qatari visitors to an enhanced array of services and products from consultants, contractors, suppliers – smart homes and general service industry leaders. In addition, guests can access vital knowledge sharing, practical workshops from government entities, live Q&As, participate in a free self-build course and learn about the latest trends and technology.
