A fivea??decade legacy of landmark delivery and engineering excellence in Qatar
2026 marked a historic Year for Gulf Contracting Co. We celebrated our 50th Anniversary. Our story begins in 1976 when, Gulf Housing Company was established as a collaboration with McInerney, a “system” house building specialist based in Ireland. Gulf Housing initially delivered prefabricated housing solutions to meet the growing demand for accommodation brought about by the development of the Qatari oil sector. Gulf Housing Company was built on a commitment to quality, precision and delivering high standards.
The collaboration grew and the demand to do more became a necessity, this is when Gulf Housing approached the then Emir of Qatar and requested a validation to the new provided services; their request was honored by an Emiri Decree, granting Gulf Housing permission to operate as a “general” contractor in the Qatari Construction Market, a status previously reserved for wholly owned Qatari construction businesses.
McInerney left the partnership in 1991 and Gulf Housing Co. continued as a wholly owned Qatari business. Early in 1996, an agreement was formed with Tilbury Douglas, a major UK based construction company, to expend the construction business, introduce new construction methods & standards, and to prepare for the future of the construction sector.
Based on the commitment to quality, precision, and high standards, GHC prospered during the construction boom which followed Qatar’s appointment to host the 2006 Asian Games & beyond and established itself as one of the leading general Contractors in Qatar. In 2008, the company changed its name to Gulf Contracting Company GCC.
GCC continued to expand its operations and legacy through its subsidiaries Spacemaker, Interspace and Al Manjara Joinery – all of who are considered leaders in their respective markets.
The list of successfully delivered GCC projects is both long and impressive. GCC has been involved in almost every sector of the Qatari Construction market and list iconic projects such as Doha Festival City, the Doha West Sewage Treatment Plant, multiple Oil and Gas civil infrastructure projects to name but a few.
GCC’s legacy is acknowledged by its peers, the Industry in general and the international community. Amongst many Awards & recognition, we were named Qatari Contractor of the Year in 2017 by Construction Week, highly commended in 2026 and partner of the year; Also, we have received a number of International RoSPA Health and Safety Awards in the last 3 consecutive years.
These acknowledgments not only support GCC’s reputation as a trusted industry leader, but are also testament to GCC’s unwavering commitment to protecting its people, its partners and to embedding worlda??class safety and sustainability practices across every one of its projects.
Commenting on achieving the milestone, Mr. Grahame McCaig, Gulf Contracting General Manager said: “Over the past 50 years, Gulf Contracting Company has remained committed to the principles it was founded on - a commitment to quality, precision and delivering high standards. This milestone reflects the quality of our people, our partnerships and our continued focus on delivering the highest standards. As we mark this milestone, we remain committed to building on this legacy and contributing to Qatar’s future development.”
