Doha, Qatar - March, 2022 – Dr. Dena Al-Thani, an Assistant Professor and the Director of Interdisciplinary Programs at the College of Science and Engineering at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, has been appointed a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on Assistive Technology. Her appointment to the multidisciplinary advisory group is a recognition of Dr. Al-Thani’s technical knowledge, skills, and experience relevant to assistive technology (AT).
She is an established researcher in the areas of inclusive design and AT, with publications in high-ranked journals and engagement with key world forums. As part of her efforts to ensure the impact of her research in Qatar, Dr. Al-Thani also serves as a consultant at the Mada Assistive Technology Center, working with the innovation team. The WHO emphasizes access to AT as a fundamental human right to live a productive, dignified, and independent life. The organization has estimated that over one billion people need AT, but only one in 10 has access to what they need. As an advisory body, the technical group will provide independent scientific and technical advice, supporting the implementation and expansion of the WHO’s Priority Assistive Product List (APL) and other support tools.
Dr. Al-Thani’s appointment, which is for two years and in her personal capacity, is expected to benefit HBKU through potential collaborations between the research university and the WHO.
