Msheireb Museums, the cultural and tourist destination at Msheireb Downtown Doha, will celebrate the 2023 International Museums Day by organizing several events that document the Qatari local heritage.

The events commence on 16 May at 7 PM at Bin Jelmood House with the signing ceremony of Discovering Arabian Deco, the latest book by award-winning architect Ibrahim Mohamed Jaidah. It showcases never-before-seen photographs, drawings, and buildings from his private collection and the Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB) archives.

The book signing will be accompanied by a special exhibition of 3D printed models of buildings featured in the book that highlight the “Qatari Deco” that started in the 1960s. The models will be showcased in the Mohammed Bin Jassim House Exhibition Space starting on 18 May.

On 18 May, another event will take place in Bin Jelmood Indoor Courtyard and will feature a day of science activities for 45 primary school-aged children highlighting the importance of STEM through engaging and fun-filled activities.

The events will be concluded on 20 May with a cultural evening titled “Sarad: Details of the Past” highlighting young local talents in the fields of writing, poetry and music. The program is organized by Qalam Hebr and Msheireb Museums, and will highlight the importance of the Arabic language and a celebration of local memories and nostalgia.

Abdulla Al-Naama, Manager of Msheireb Museums said: “Msheireb Museums is proud to mark the 2023 International Museums Day and celebrate the heritage of our human history. Our events aim to explore our rich legacy and inspire the current generations to recognize the valuable contributions of our ancestors. It is an opportunity for our community to learn more about our local history and preserve it for the years to come. We welcome all people to come and enjoy architecture, poetry, art and science”.

International Museum Day has been celebrated on May 18 since 1977. The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness on museums as a symbol of cultural exchange and as beacons of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among people.

Msheireb Museums mark a very significant milestone for Msheireb Properties in realizing the vision of Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatar’s first sustainable regeneration project. The Museums celebrate the history of four historic heritage houses in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha. Located within the oldest part of the capital, they form an essential part of Qatar’s national history. These reconstructed buildings and gallery spaces allow the community to engage in the significant aspects of Qatar’s past and memories of life before the country’s rapid economic development.
